Long biography

Born in Malta, Claire Debono graduated with an MMus from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Operatic roles include Anne Trulove The Rake’s Progress for Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, Ilia Idomeneo with Les Arts Florissants including performances at the Lincoln Centre, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Peralada Festival and Teatro Filarmonico di Verona, Hanako Hanjo and Despina Così fan tutte for Opéra de Lyon, Zerlina Don Giovanni for Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie on their tour of Japan, Barbarina Le Nozze di Figaro for English National Opera and Opéra de Lyon, Unzellman The Maltese Cross (Camilleri), Vespina in Haydn’s L’Infedeltà delusa at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, Minerva and Amore in Monteverdi’s Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria, Fortuna, Venere and Pallade inL’Incoronazione di Poppea at the Teatro Real, La Gloire, Phenice and Lucinde in Lully’s Armide for Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Cupid Semele with Christophe Rousset, further performances of L’Infedeltà delusa in Luxembourg and Lille, Isabelle L’Amant Jaloux with Jeremie Rhorer at Versailles, Adina L’Elisir d’Amore in St Étienne, Rouen, Venere and Iride La Didone with Les Arts Florissants, 1st lady Die Zauberflöte with Jean-Christophe Spinosi at Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and Despina Cosi fan Tutte at Théâtre des Champs-Elysées with Jérémie Rhorer, Purcell’s The Fairy Queen at the Opéra Comique in Paris, the Opéra de Caen, BAM and at the Glyndebourne Festival.

Concert performances include a Tour of Europe and New York with William Christie’s Le Jardin des Voix and several tours of music by Charpentier, Lully, Mondonville and Purcell at the Carnegie Hall, The Barbican, Ambronay and the Chapelle Royale de Versailles with Les Arts Florissants. Claire has also sung in several recitals for the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Unsuk Chin’s Cantatrix Sopranica for the Settembre Musica Festival (Milan and Turin) with The London Sinfonietta, Israel in Egypt with Emmanuelle Haim at The Edinburgh Festival, Mozart Mass in C Minor with the Orchestre de Paris (Paavo Järvi), Mahler 2nd Symphony with Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège, a concert of Rameau Grands Motets with Emanuelle Haim, Handel’s Messiah with The King’s Consort and tours of Couperin’s Leçons de ténèbres with The King’s Consort and Le Poème Harmonique.

Recent and future performances include Despina Cosi fan tutte as well as Madame Riss in Les Femmes Vengées by Philidor at the Kennedy Centre in Washington DC, Lincoln Centre and Versailles and Rameau’s Les Fêtes de l’Hymen et de l’Amour with Opéra Lafayette, a Monteverdi programme with Emmanuelle Haim on tour, a Mozart recital with Le Cercle de l’Harmonie, Israel in Egypt with the Ancient Academy of Music, concerts with les Musiciens de saint Julien in France in France and Poland, La Petite Messe Solennelle in France with The Navigators and the role of La Chanteuse in Mr de Pourceaugnac in Les Bouffes du Nord, Paris and on tour in France and Europe with Les Arts Florissants.

Claire’s discography includes Le Jardin des Voix (EMI/Virgin Classics) and Divine Hymns (EMI/Virgin Classics) as well as DVD recordings of Armide (FRA Musica), L’Amant Jaloux (Wahoo), La Didone (Opus Arte), Il Ritorno d’Ulisse (Dynamic), L’incoronazione di Poppea (EMI) and The Fairy Queen (Opus Arte).
